I like the allergen filters, but someone recently told us the blue ones put less stress on your heat/ac system and are better in the long run.

If you are talking about the cheap fiberglass ones, the answer they gave you is bunk. These filters allow all kinds of crap to get on your "A-Coil" and you will one day spend a LOT OF Money getting your system cleaned. Besides, cleaner air is healthier air.

Benefits of Having a High MERV Rating AC Filter or Furnace Filter:

It is important for consumers to remember that not all AC or Furnace Filters are designed equal. Most will opt for the cheapest filter available, but this is not always the smartest choice. This may save you money now, but over a period of time may cost much more.

Stay away from the cheap ones - they don't really filter much. Most other kinds of filters you can clean and re-use. But whatever you do, either clean (if you can) or replace your filters pretty regularly. Check them every month at first, to see how much dust is collecting on them. If you can't really see much, try checking less frequently. But don't let it go, or you will be paying a big bill to replace your motor.

Very Best and very very very expensive-Hepa
Best-Electronic Air Cleaner
Better-Media Air Cleaner
Very Good-3M Filtrete Pleated
Good-Std. Pleated
O.K.-Woven Fiberglass
Bad-Electrostatic

Any dirty filter will starve the system for air( less in = less out)
The finer the filter material, the faster it will get dirty.
Pleated filters have more service area to collect dirt.

I was recently told by my A/C guy to not use the cheap, blue ones...they may be less expensive, but they do not filter dust, etc. as well. You'll end up paying for it when they come to service/clean you A/C unit. Try for ones with better filtration.

I believe the blue filters as you have described are worthless. They do little in filtering the air you breathe. I believe in filters you get what you pay for.
