It's a song from the musical "Porgy and Bess". It was written by Gershwin (as previously stated), but was first performed by singer/actress Abbie Mitchell in October 1935 when it opened at the Alvin Theater in New York. Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald were the first popular artists to record it.

It was from Gershwin's 1935 opera 'Porgy and Bess'. Not sure who recorded it first, maybe Billie Holliday, but it has been covered by a lot of artists.

I think it was the lovely Miss Nina Simone but not sure. I am sure however, that it was the ever so lovely Miss Janis Joplin that made it a classic. ;-)
