He has not asked for any personal info like bank or ss#, but I wonder if it is always a bad idea to make a transaction this way or if it ever safe

Go and see a lawyer or a bonafide real estate agent and let them work for you. The lawyer cost you money up front, the real estate agent gets his commission after the sale has taken place. Play it safe.

I would not do it.. It could be some psycho trying to get info on you.. Be cautious.
