Montana.

Joe Montana.

Then Johnny Unitas

Then it gets into a tight race, and really depends on what you consider 'great'. John Elway, Dan Marino, Fran Tarkenton...

I suppose you can also count by superbowls - in which case Terry Bradshaw is up there (otherwise I wouldn't consider him, even though he's a hall of famer).

Tarkenton and Marino never won a Super Bowl - but both are generally considered truly great quarterbacks. Payton Manning on the other hand is steadily destroying Marino's records... so who knows.

Anyway - its kind of a tossup - but Unitas or Montana (my vote) are generally considered the greatest quarterbacks to have ever lived.

I think the best quarterback that ever lived was Troy Aikman, but he retired. Brett Favre would be next because he is still playing.

"Slingin'" Sammy Baugh

Before him and Sid Luckman the QB was a RB who occasionally threw about as often LT does today.

They changed the position.

Personally I would pick Baugh over Luckman based on nothing.

I see lots of Brady, Montana, Manning, et. al. but no one redefined the position. Besides you get a bonus. Baugh was a better saftey than any of those guys.:)

Stats wise? If he comes back for another year, it'll be Brett Favre. His endurance record alone is remarkable. Now if you go by the post-season record, there's only Terry Bradshaw. He's got four rings.

Other key indicators could be QB smarts, which goes to Montana, or sheer arm strength which I hand to Dan Fouts. And then there's the nebulous "heart" catagory, which I'll crown Doug Flutie with.

Out of all these gentlemen, I'm going with proven performance and Big Game stats. It's Bradshaw.

Odd question. Sort of implies there must have been someone else who was the best quaterback who NEVER lived. Im not a Colts fan, and his story is far from written yet. But if he wins this weekend, and especially if he can win another one, then Peyton Manning has to be the guy. Give him two rings and all of Marinos records.....and he's it.
