Google itself gives me a page rank of 3/10 which isn't bad but when I search for these key words: "web design exeter" my site isn't on Google listing at all. I haven't been penalized because I can find my site on Google if I search for my domain.
Here's the URL: http://www.nationaldesign.org

Google lists according to meta tags - they are more fussy who they list. Can take up to 6 weeks if you have only just submitted your site and they feel your site is worthy.

They will not list if your site is incomplete or links are broken.

You can read about their criteria on line re submitting site etc.

Hope the information is enlightening.

If you have recently updated the site - it is sometime removed from such sites in till new spybots find the website.
You may also email Google for more information about buying a set position on Yahoo.

It sound like you need to hang around Google more. You rise on those lists according to your participation. I am high on Yahoo in certain areas because I put all my energy into Yahoo but you could dedicate yourself to Google if you thought it would be better.

Personally I don't think it matters much unless you are dealing with AOL which is a joke but that is only MHO.

google does take a little longer to get onto, they really are a little more fussy about what sites get on there. give it some time and youll probably be right up at the top of the list.
