Money orders are a type of check that is basically backed by a bank as being as good as cash.

Many banks and businesses prefer money orders because they are guaranteed by the issuing bank to be good.

A regular check drawn on a personal account doesn't offer that guarantee and can often times "bounce" (meaning it's written for an amount that is greater than in the account) thereby making it worthless.

A money order is guaranteed because you pay the issuer cash (and a small handling fee) and they in turn issue a money order. I recommend going to the good old US Post Office for a money order. For any amount under $500 they are less than a buck, they're easy to get, and recognized just about everywhere.

Some people think that money orders are completely safe. They are not.

Some scams use fake money orders. Most businesses will accept them, but I would be very careful accepting one for an Ebay purchase.

I would NEVER accept one from outside the country without waiting at least 15 days for it to clear. It should be treated like a personal check, not cash, if it is from out of the country.

If it is from Nigeria, don't even bother to deposit it, it is probably a scam. If the person wants you to send them money back, same story...SCAM.
