so...teaching in teh South Bronx sucks! i have no books, I teach over 150 students, I've gotten robbed in school 3 times already this year, and Yes, no matter how positive and strict I try to be, I still have to yell at the top of my lungs to get simple things done (sit down)...so...don't know if I should just leave already, and focus on my wedding (seriously behind in planning due to job related stress) or stick it out till the end of the year...who knows...somebody steer me in the right direction please, I am about to have a nervous breakdown!:)
gracias

You hate your job, but do you like teaching?
Take some time for yourself, and make preparations for your wedding. You sound like you really could use some time for yourself and your life. You can always go back to teaching, if you decide to do so after your wedding.

Try addressing the kids as people (with lives and passions, and hard situations) instead of as your students (sit down, be quiet, listen to me)
Then they might actually be able to listen to you more easily because they will feel that you also hear them, and can see them. Help them to know that you see them and hear them, and they will be able to see you and hear you. You might not get everything taught in the day that you wanted to get taught, but it sounds like you don't always get to do that anyway. At least if you are interacting with the students, what you do get to teach them will stick...you might like a book called Teacher Man by Frank McCourt. It doesn't sound like you have much time for spare reading, but if you can take a look at it, maybe his stories would help...I think he was actually in NY too..

I hope you stick it outfor the rest of the year, those kids probably need you more than it seems like they do...
My job has been kicking my butt lately, so I'll stick it out with you here, at least for the year!

Maybe you can incorporate your wedding planning into a class activity one day :-) That might be stretching it a little..

all the best to you

I definitely think inner city teachers should get combat pay. And you thought "Up the Down Staircase" was just fiction, didn't you?

I once proposed shooting the meanest kid on the first day of school and letting his corpse lie there for a few days as an object lesson, but could never get the school board to approve.

Sorry, this isn't much help, is it? If your health is at risk, then start looking for a teaching job outside of the big city.

It is pointless to persevere in a situation as hopeless as this. Leave as soon as you can. You are doing no one any good by remaining. Why would you stay? Is it loyalty to your students - the ones you have to scream at to get them to sit down? Or is it loyalty to the school - the school that gives you 150 kids to teach with no resources? If your efforts go unnoticed and unrewarded, why would you persist?

Smoke a little herb on the weekends to help with the nerves. Stick in to the end of the year. Then get married and blow town, go someplace else.

If i were you, I would leave. Although people normally tell you to stick it out and don't quit.. you got robbed. your safety is being jeopordized. Plus, you should love what you're doing not hate it.. do what you love and if this isn't it, quit and go find it!
