In the Detroit Redwings game vs. the New York Islanders on Jan 30th, Nicklas Lidstrom was listed as being -1 in the game stats, however he was also listed as having 3 assists. If the Islanders only scored 3 goals, how can Lidstrom be -1? The only thing I can think of is his third point came in overtime. If your +/- is not effected in overtime, why should you be able to get points?

+/- is linked to being on the ice when regular strength or shorthanded goals are scored. If you are on the ice when a goal is scored for your team and you are not on the power play, you get +1. If a goal is scored against and you are not shorthanded, you get -1. It is a very important stat for defensemen.

In the game on January 30th against the Isles, Lidstrom got two even-strength assists and one power player assist, giving him +2. However, the Islanders scored 2 even-strength goals and one shorthanded goal, all of them when Lidstrom was on the ice, giving him a -3. Mathematically, 2 - 3 = (-1)

Yeah, it hurts, but that's hockey.

Lidstrom was on the ice for three goals however you do not receive a +/- for powerplay goals for your team. therefore let's say 2 of his 3 assists were on a power play leaving 1 assist in which he helped on even strength goals, giving him a +1. The other team scores 3 total goals say 1 PP and 2 even strength goals. Lidstrom is on the ice for all three but PP there is no +/- however the plus/minus is not set in stone so Lidstrom being on the ice for two even strength goals by the opponent would take him from a +1 - -2 = -1.

First of all Lidstroms' points may be while on the power-play(extra-man) therefore not getting a plus stat for these. He received a minus for the goals against that he was on the ice for during even strength situations or if he was scored against while he had the power-play. So technically a guy could have 5 power points, if he was on the ice while even strength and was scored 4 times against his total would be -4

Points earned during a power play do not count towards a player's +/- rating. So if the player had 3 points, all on the PP and he was on the ice when the other team scored at even strength he could still be minus one.

Without checking the box-score to be precise, I can tell you that it is possible. The reason is that power-play points do not affect +/- ratings. So if the player scored just one of his 3 points on the power play but was on-ice for all 3 even strength goals by the opposition he would record a minus 1 for the game.

The reason that power play points are not part of +/- is that it is deemed unfair and/or inaccurate to give credit or to penalize for points occurring when one team has a man advantage, given that the +/- rating was created to attempt to identify the best all-around player reflecting both offensive and defensive skills.

He was on the ice for one more Islander equal strength goal than he was for equal strength goals for the WIngs. Or, he was on the ice if Detroit gave up a short handed goal, which giving up SH goals effects +/-. Either way, a Detroit PP or Islander SH goal had to be involved.

+/- is a dumb 'stat'.
you don't get a PLUS if you're on ice for a power play goal, so if lidstrom's 3 pts were all on the powerplay, then he gets no +'s...and if he got 1 - then he's -1 for the goal with 3 assists

yeah that guy is right, if your team is on a power play than you dont get a + and if your short handed you don't get a -. so evan if he was out there for all of his teams goals but they were on a power play and only one of the other teams at evan strength, he would still be -1

he could of scored his goals on the power play and be on the ice when the other team scored one goal against him when he was on the ice and that would give him a -1 rating.
