He suffered from depression and was addicted to heroin. No one will ever really know why exactly. He also never had a very good life growing up and fame didn't bring the happiness/relief that he thought it would. He was overcome by his life, the fame etc...
He had tried to kill himself previously I think the same year in Rome with an overdose, but it didn't work. I guess that's why he chose the more violent route the second time.

Nirvana is one of those bands that you really should get all the albums. Not a bad song on them.

If you want to explore the topic more, there is an indie film/ semi-documentary called "Kurt and Courtney" about his death that's interesting. I believe that his diaries were published as well.

Why does anyone kill themself? Here are other artists who took their life, do you think there is an explanation?

Ernest Hemmingway
Elliot Smith
Vincent Van Gogh
Nick Drake
Faron Young
Del Shannon
Adolf Hitler
Sylvia Plath
Spalding Gray

And this was just people I can think of that are famous. This does not include the thousands of people who take their life every year. It's pretty rude, I think, and simple to just say that Kurt Cobain killed himself because of Courtney Love. From other things I've read by him he seemed to hold her in a very high esteem and had great respect for her as an artist. But even if her personality was overbearing, he had options like divorce. He killed himself because, for reasons we can never know, he couldn't stand to live any longer. We can look at his entire life of pain and drug abuse and make assumptions, but we would only looking at the bad parts of his life, not the great parts that made him happy and alive.

Anyways, if you're interested in suicide on a philosophical level, you should read "The Myth of Sisyphus" by Albert Camus. He tries to address the question of whether life is worth living and how suicide begs the question of the value of life itself. and it's actually an easy and non-depressing read.

There was a special on tv that said that kurt was filing for divorce from Courtney Love. He apparently was having an affair with the original bassist from her band Hole Kristain Pfaff. If he divorced her, she would have ended up with nothing due to their prenupt. She had to get rid of him, also to add to this, just 2 months after Kurts death, Kristain Pfaff was found dead in her bath tub from an apparent drug overdose. Coincidence? I don't think so.

first off kurt killed himself becaused he was messed up , he was a heroine addict with a lot of stomach problems. i was also 3 when he died. there could be lots of reasons.
second off- there are lost of albums. incesticide, bleach, nevermind, in utero, live in NY, from the muddy banks of wishkah, with the lights out. the last thing he wanted to be was a celebrity

dont believe that sh*t about courtney.. she *was* a great artist (not anymore definetly) and hey they bonded thru drugs... whatever... love is love

they are the best band that ever lived. you can also buy kurts diary.

It was pressure, he never wanted to be famous, he just wanted to have a good time with his band, but eventually he became the very thing he despised. And he had no way to get out of it, so he killed himself.

RIP Kurt

During the last years of his life, Cobain struggled with drug addiction and the media pressures surrounding him and his wife Courtney Love. On April 8, 1994, Cobain was found dead in his home. His death was officially ruled a suicide by self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head. Since then, the circumstances surrounding his death have fueled much analysis and debate.

I would suggest reading Charle R. Cross's biography. This is the most insightful biography of his life and the possible reasons leading up Kurt suicide.

If you were just 3 when he died investigate Niravna's works to the full as well as their influences (if you haven't already!).

About a month before he had killed himself, he was hospitalized for a drug overdose/suicide attempt in Europe. He really should have sought the help he needed at that time, but he didn't and then next attempt was successful.

He had problems with heroin and depression. He also hated being a part of the media spotlight. It just overwhelmed him.

One of music's most tragic tales. R.I.P Kurt Cobain
