R & B stands for Rhythm and Blues; in the 80s it took a backseat to newer forms of popular music such as Urban Contemporary, which included music such as Lionel Richie, Micheal Jackson and New Edition, in the 90s it split even further into such genre as New Jack Swing (think Wrecks and Effect, Backstreet), Hip-Hop Soul (think Soul to Soul, Mary J. Blidge) and by the 21st century it had turned into NeoSoul. About the closest mainstream artist we have to what R & B used to stand for is Robin Thicke. The irony is that it appears that "true" R & B has become the new Jazz, which means that other cultures have picked up on it but the one's who had originally pioneered the sound are no longer interested in it. On the other hand, many are implying that the success of Chris Brown, with his pure, unadulterated lyrics actually suggests that real R & B is back, just that it's a bit ahead of it's time right now ...
