Every car is different. On some E means empty. On others well, another 50-150 miles. Hey, if you can't afford to put gas in, don't drive. When you are at E, you tend to bring up all the garbage left in the tank and clog up the filters on the way to the carb or injectors.

Usually when the gas symbol glows or the arrow is really close to the E there is enough time to get to a gas station. I think that there would be a gallon or two left. That would be maybe 15-30 miles.

Should never let it get to E, I know sometimes it can't be helped though. Fill it when it's on E...as much as you can get in it, make note of how much you put in it then look in the owners manual, it should tell you the capacity of the tank. Knowing this as well as what you get for mileage you can figure out pretty close to how much distance E will get you....If you know your gonna run out it's best to shut the car off and get help than to run it completely out...hard on fuel pumps, filters and injectors.

One way to find that out.
