The complication comes from the fact that there are so many phone companies and sites like Yahoo or other of their competitors which all have their systems, rules, and ways of working.
For example with Yahoo, you can search to see how to send text messages, and they will ask which type of phones are involved and then you can find out the possilities.

Yes .. yahoo messanger has that feature and its free for you to use although there may be a charge on your G/F phone depending on how her account is set up .. The feature is called SMS ... all you have to do is type in her phone number including area code and then send a message as you would when chatting to someone ..

First you must have IM (instant messaging) capability in your computer ISP.
If you have it, click on it, and when the box appears, type the phone number you are sending it to as +1-000-000-0000. Make sure you have the plus sign, the 1, and the area code, then the seven digit phone number.
In the message box, type your text, then SEND.

You really got to go to www.peekamo.com and register for their free service. At peekamo, you can send free TXT messages to anyone in the USA and Canada from your desktop. You don't need to know their carrier or anything. Best part is that it is free, for you and the person receiving the TXT msg. Peekamo uses SMPP not SMTP. You don't have to worry about spam either. You can create groups too. I'm from Canada where if you don't have a plan, TXT messages to the US can cost upto 15cents! Check it out - it really works and its really free. and no spam at all.
Why pay the telco's when you don't have to right!

Depends on the company. I know someone who has a Nextel phone through Sprint, so I can go to the Sprint site and they have a link on the main page that allows me to text message to their phone number. Try www.sprint.com for theirs. :-)
