I'm very, very shy and awkward person, and always have been. I do have some close friends, and I can be myself around them, but it's not completely me...it's not like the way I am at home. At home, with my immediate family, I can joke and not laugh at myself. But in public, comments and jokes are non-existant...or awkward. If someone says something funny to me, I'll just laugh...and don't say anything more...so they assume that I'm brushing them off and don't care.
I'm so sick of looking lame or like a kill-joy. What can I do to really be myself around others?

its just something u'll have to do...U have to not care what others think like if u want to do something silly u are probably thinking "will everyone think this funny?" Its like you're worried how everyone will take it and u shouldnt be cause then you're not being yourself. So just act like how u are and screw whoever doesn't like it.

WOW! I am quite outgoing and I have the same problem every now and then too! Sometimes I am a little too concerned about what these new people will think of me so I clam up and feel insecure. This can be stressful and stress stifles creativity. Creativity allows you to see and point out the humor in different situations.

It can take time to feel comfortable but how about bringing along a friend who you feel confident around, particularly one that is good at bringing others into a conversation. This person can be your spring board to interaction by keeping the conversation moving while playing off of your strengths (steering the conversation toward topics you are knowledgeable at or enjoy). As your success grows, so will your confidence

I have mastered the open mouth, insert foot syndrome, if you need any advice on that. . .

Yeah, I get like that too. You don't have to be funny. If you don't know what they're talking about or something, just make a little comment to add to the conversation, but don't be all cheesy. Once you get comfortable with people they will see your true personality.

I know that you mean, I've started reading a book called "Off the Cuff - what to say at a moment's notice" which gives you tips on overcoming fear of public speaking (which would include groups of strangers, I guess) Good luck!

be yourself and relax. . . maybe your too cautious about what others might think about you. the best way to handle it is just be yourself and relax...

it is not what others might think about you but what others see in you. . .
