There is debate. The general consensus by historians is that the vikings first settled in the New England area years before the Jamestown settlement. It is known they discovered America before Columbus. As for permanent settlements, that would be the British. The Spanish settled down south.

Vikings from northern Europe came to America thousand of years ago (Like Lief Ericson) but they did not last long. It was untill Christopher Columbus opened trade routes and people have been coming here like crazy. The pilgrims were part of these religous groups (Separitist and some others) who wanted religous freedom and they built the first permenent settlement in the United States of America known as Jamestown, Virginia. that is how my first Euopean ancestors came to America where my family stayed ever since.

the vikings arrived first around 1000 A.D. but to speak a bout a settlement i would say the spaniards were the first to achieve and maintain an organized settlement in San Agustin, Fla.
