Istanbul is the modern name of the city formerly known as Byzantium, also known as Constantinople, and called by the Norse (aka "vikings") Miklagaard. It is in modern day Turkey, the large country east of Greece in the area between the Mediterranean and the Black sea known as "Asia Minor".
Baghdad is on the news practically every night. It's in modern Iraq, where the war is going on. Iraq is in the area called mesopotamia ("between the rivers"), north of the Persian Gulf and also, technically, in Asia. During the time that the Norse were there, Baghdad was ruled by the Buwayhids who were Persians (aka Iranians).
Also, you should note that the Norse did NOT reach Miklegaard and Baghdad by sea. They traveled east, through the Baltic Sea, down the Volga River to the Caspian sea and from there over land to Baghdad or they traveled down the Daugava (aka. Western Dvina) River to the Black Sea and from there sailed to Miklagaard. These routes are sometimes called the "Eastern River Routes".
If you've ever seen the opening scenes of the movie "The 13th Warrior" (with Antonio Banderas), you'll see a Norse longship sailing a river. They are portraying a trip along the Volga (Banderas' character being a Persian from Baghdad).
