On my New Jersey album cover there is a picture of 5 guys in the band. Jon, Richie, Tico, David, and Alec. Today there are only 4 members of the band Bon Jovi.

Can anyone tell me how long Alec was a member of the band and why he left?

Alec John Such (born November 14, 1956 in Yonkers, New York) was the bassist for the band Bon Jovi. He left the band in 1994 and has not been officially replaced.

According to interviews with Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora in an episode of Behind the Music, Such was dismissed from the band due to unsatisfactory performance during live concerts. Also his quality of session recordings during the Crossroads album were a contributing factor to his dismissal from Bon Jovi.

Before Bon Jovi, Such played with fellow Bon Jovi member Richie Sambora in a band called Message.

Hugh McDonald took over Such's position as bassist, having already played on several albums from Bon Jovi's debut onwards. However, he is not an "official" member of the band, since the members agreed not to officially replace Alec. Hugh does not appear on album artwork or publicity shots.

After leaving Bon Jovi, Such has managed a couple of local New Jersey bands, and also owns a motorcycle shop in New York City.

Alec briefly rejoined Bon Jovi on stage at a 2001 concert at Giants Stadium in New Jersey. Lead singer Jon Bon Jovi has made it public that there has been contact between Alec and the band recently.
