You really can't...craigslist is great but you're taking a risk whenever you buy something.

The best thing to do is meet the person who's selling the item, see it for yourself first-hand, and bring cash to pay for it.

Usually Craigslist is local. You go to the person's house and you see the stuff for yourself. I do it all the time. Pay cash. I find the craigslist people are just trying to get rid of their stuff and just trying to make a quick buck. They are not ambitious or business minded like Ebay people. They are very generous and you can usually bargain down the price with a lot of them too. Alot of times they have a whole bunch of free stuff too. I got a free piano and real Christmas tree. Take Care. Craigslist Rocks!

You don't really buy from Craigslist. It's a reference list for you to buy from someone on the list.
The best way is to buy locally and not have to do through the mail. Then you can pay by Paypal, check or cash and not worry about being ripped off by soemone far away.
As a matter of fact, when you open Craigs list site, there is a caution note about buying and selling and not using Western Union and those services. You should read it. Go to www.craigslist.com.

Craigs list is just a bulletin board for individual postings, it is rampant with scams and there are no safeguards excepting seeing the product for your self. I buy of Craigs list but only locally and I go see the merchandise before purchase.

You don't, since Craigslist don't sell anything. It's a listing service only. Buyer and seller are responsible for themselves.

I don't know if you can purchase anything really securely, but our focus is on local transactions, so you can see what you're getting into.

Beyond that, use normal precautions in any purchase, just like anything else you'd do.

You can't. It's the same as any classified ad, like you'd find in a newspaper.
