Basically Rome fell round 200 ad. from 200-800 ad is know as the dark ages due to very limited growth / art / invention / change in the world. from about 1300-1600 is the renesance era - named for lots of changes and a return to greek classical thought. From 800-1300 is well... you guessed it in the middle.

I concur mostly with Thomas R. The era is simply the "middle" between intellectual progress, though I must correct him in saying Rome fell 476 AD, though it wasn't exactly flourishing in the centuries preceding that.
