I am all stoked up because I get to fire my very first employee tomorrow. My boss has now put me in charge of notifying employees when they get fired or layed off. Basically i get to be the axe man, which is kind of cool I must say. How should I approach it and what should I say. I have already decided that I am going to let her work until 30 minutes before her shift is over then give her the news so she can't walk out and leave us short handed.

I thought about something like this. How does this sound? I go up to her and 30 minutes before her shift is over and say "Hey we are looking to cut payroll hours how would you like to go home now?" Knowing the lazy cow she is, she will gladly take the time off, then when she agrees I will say "Oh and one more thing, you are gonna have alot of time off from now on. In fact don't even bother coming back because we you're FIRED!!"

Yep you have all confirmed that I have the right answer with your silly ninny talk of fairy tales like Karma. Labor laws schmabor laws you silly people don't know what your are talking about or the circumstances involved. Let's just say that this is an employee that everyone has been looking forward to getting rid of for a long time. I am sure we will all have a party the minute that cow walks out the door for the last time. And I am going to enjoy telling her to hit the road. In fact if I could I would play Na Na Na Na Hey Hey goodbye over the PA while I did it.

well you will have labour laws on your butt in a minute. You are definite not ready for this position. Maybe your boss is looking for a way to get rid of you... First and for-most if you were ready for a position like this you would not be on here asking the best way to do it. I hope that you have a reason to lay her off and the facts signed on paper. If you are ready for this position you must know all the labour laws by now right. If not I suggest you stay up all night reading them or you may find yourself and your company in a lot of hot water....

Firing an employee should be straight to the point and non emotional (it worries me that you seem to take so much pleasure in this, makes me think you are gonna be the one on the recieving end soon)

I've done it many times, its strictly business.. its private and straight to the point.. you say we are going to have to let you go , and you cite the reason (because that reason is going to end up on an unemployment application you can bet)

You methods are simply going to land you out of a job and with the company liable for the legal responsibility.. You boss is lacking in intelligence for putting someone such as you in charge of such a delicate matter.. Your boss will live to regret it.

Remember....What you give out comes back....ten fold.
I see a long rocky road for you. Very unprofessional to get all stoked up about firing someone, and referring to her as a lazy cow just tells me that you need to put others down to make yourself look better. Sad part is, it doesn't work and you look like the true fool here.
I'm curious who the clown is that put you in charge of hiring and firing? She's better off without this company.

I say be forward, honest, and yet tactful. I wouldn't want my boss telling me "you're a great employee" if I'm about to be let go. Tell them why they don't fit in the operation and be prepared for the possible guilt trips or fit of rage.

However, after reading a little more into it, don't let her work that shift. Go ahead and make accommodations for her absence and get to it early. Don't waste your time trying to get "one more good shift" out of her.

Even that you consider she is a lazy cow she needs the job that's why she goes to work everyday, if you don't want her in the company anymore be honest and say "your performance is not the one we required that's why we release you from your job, i am sorry! I hope you have a better luck in your next job!
remeber in the future it could be you! :S

Try not being an ***, finding a new job is inconvenient. Don't know where you work, but don't have her hang around after you tell her. People tend to steal stuff when they know they are being/have been fired.

How about being honest and respectful and say something like "You work is not up to our policy and we have to let you go". Simple, easy, and to the point...if you go after her with THAT attitude, you and your boss can be sued and then your boss can fire YOU...

first, find a heart and have it surgically implanted into your chest. don't be a jerk because you might get fired yourself one day. You make choices just like she does. karma can be a ***** or your best friend. It's up to you.
