I don't think that it's erroneous to think that animals are capable of emotion. You can't convince me that I'm wrong either.

When my daughter was a newborn, our Golden Retriever was protective of her as if she was a puppie, and was so tolerant of both our kids as they went through toddlerhood. Maddie put up with a lot of pain and discomfort that the kids innocently put her through. The actions that I interpreted as being acts of forgiveness were immediate and unprovoked. She licked and nuzzled the child who had been pulling her fur just seconds before.

So it's not a great leap for me to consider that animals can also be courageous. I have seen a cat absolutely own an aggressive German Shepherd. Yes the cat was defending itself under threat, but that was one brave cat, no kidding.

I have a harder time visualizing insects as having emotions. My concept of insect "brains" is that they are too simple for such complex mentation. They are simply hard wired to behave as they do. I don't think they have much "choice" in life at all.

I believe that animals such as cats and dogs certainly have less consciousness of choice than people do, but I wonder about animals like elephants, dolphins and whales. I haven't had first hand experience with them such that I could form opinions.

Anthropomorphism's aside; when the female of many species overcomes what is observable fear in the defense of her young, then I would call that courage. Not all do so.
