Unless Carol is your boss, I would just continue to act normally. I would speak if you cross paths, but just a simple "hello". Everyone else probably realizes that Carol is not a nice person. Let her hang herself with her comments. People like her do these things to make themselves feel better. Go on with your life and be thankful you only have to deal with her at work!

I would say even if Carol *is* your boss, you should take her aside and deal with it. Be diplomatic, and willing to give a little. Find out what the problem is first. If there really is nothing you can do about it, tell her that she is making you uncomfortable with her actions. If she continues, tell her she is being unprofessional and that you'll take it to the next level.
My "above all" statement is for you to document cases where she is rude to your or slanders you, and to have these things ready to arm yourself if you have to go to a supervisor or manager. Also, try to keep your nose clean (and I mean spotless) while you're going about all of this. Don't give her any more reasons to treat you rudely.

Carol has an insecurity problem, though it probably doesnt seem like that. The only thing you can do is confront her calmly and RESPECTFULLY but not....i said DO NOT give her cause to think less of you. Talk to her as though you already kno why she is mad at you. She will probably explain to you whats bothering her. If not i suggest you pray for her.

You pissed Carol off once, and that is all it took....until you humble yourself and beg her forgiveness (or buy her off somehow) she will hate you and be out for blood.
I don't know why some women are like that, but I have known quite a few, myself. Vindictive is the word, I think. (Baba Yaga can look it up for me! ;) )

Nothing, she isn't worth wasting your precious time. Just continue to be civil towards her and realise it's her problem, not yours. Take care : )
