I work in a supermarket as a bagger, and this new cashier always acts rude and nasty towards me. I hate to talk to my boss, because she's not an easy person to talk to. What should I do?

You say she's new? That already gives you a heads up with the boss even if your boss is hard to talk to...you shouldn't be made to feel uncomfortable on the job. Have you thought about making an anonymous complaint to the boss by leaving a letter on her desk? Or if there are a few coworkers that feel the same why not all go to the boss together to share the burden? Chances are the boss will be very glad to hear your concern as I'm sure she doesn't want her staff upset either. The boss might have already heard about this person's behaviour and is just waiting to see if anyone else complains before she takes action.

She's new, so she's probably feeling pretty insecure and with some people this comes out as rudeness. Alternatively she could be snobbish and think that somehow she's superior to you because she's a cashier and in her eyes you're 'only' a bagger. Maybe she's gone through a bad time in her personal life and the only job she can get is a very low-wage job and this has her worried and insecure also.

Don't be rude back - you're smarter than that. Is there a small kindness you can do for her? not to make a big thing of it, but (for example) offering to get her drink at break-time when you're getting yours? Or draw her into general conversation with friends? If she's being rude because she's insecure this ought to help, although maybe slowly at first. Then give her some time to see whether it gets better. If not, or if she's rude to you in front of the customers (not good for the shop's image), and especially if she's rude to everyone, then ask her directly to stop; and if that doesn't work, one of you should find a way to bring it up with the boss. (Don't discount the possibility that the boss has noticed; she's probably got responsibility for training the new person and may be asking her anyway how she's settling in).

Good luck.

yeah that's not easy - you don't want retaliation and then make the situation worse. I think you need to address it yourself with your colleague first. Give them a chance to change their behaviour. Say something like, "I've noticed you seem to be somewhat irritated and short around me lately. Is there something we need to talk about?" Be direct and call them on it. If they have any maturity they will adjust their behaviour. If not... well then it's off to the conflict resolution 101 in your bosses office I'm afraid

wait till the shop is full then yell at the top of your voice

"WHAT THE HELL IS YOUR PROBLEM?"

It will work every time... not to mention you will both get hauled in fron t of the boss, this will give you a prime oportunity to air your grievences and state the facts while the other partie is there...

nod. smile. ignore. That's basically it. If the cashier is rude, sooner or later the customers will complain. It'll be ok.

Just ignore her...or you can tell your friends to come over and ask them to complain for you but first let them know why!
