As I was going to St Ives....
I was the only one going to St Ives, although there were 8 people and a slew of felines leaving.... Unless they were also going to St Ives, but the riddle doesn't specify where they were going.

Brilliant! This brings back very happy memories. My dad used to say this every year when we were driving down to Cornwall and it puzzled me for years. Finally, when I was about 8/9 the penny dropped. Love it!

This is a totally bogus question. "One" is the answer that is usually given. But there is a dubious assumption that you only meet people when travelling in an opposite direction to them. You can, of course, meet people as you walk past them. Thus the true answer is..... No idea!
Technically, I should get the 10 points, but nobody likes a smartarse.
