Believe me ,this is a fairy tale. Any zookeeper can tell you there are plenty of mice in and around the hay the elephants eat . No elephant ever pays attention to them.The rumor probably started because it looks like a mouse could conceivably run up an elephants trunk - inside and get into his brain .Pure nonsense nothing else.

They are only scared of mice in cartoons. In real life, a mouse is so small compared to an elephant that the elephant would probably not even notice it.

when I was a kid there was a joke about it, that the mice came up to to the elephants ear and told the elephant he will bite his balls so the elephant shrieked and the mouse showed the cats and dogs he isn't afraid of the elephant.

Just an urban legend, probably based on the fact that elephants are frightened by sudden, unexpected movements.

uhhhh, I think that's just an urban legend. An elephant is too big to even see a mouse.

They're not. They don't like mice crawling on them or in their food, for the same reasons you don't like cockroaches crawling on you or in your food.
