I just recently got a betta from walmart, his name is Cyan and he is in a 5 gallon w/ a small hideout, 3 small plants, heater(tank around 82F) undergravel filter, the water is dechlored, cycled, levels of all stuff are fine. The problem is on his tail fin he developed red lines, is this fin rot? They are on the middle of his tail and keep getting bigger. What meds should I use to cure this, WHAT does he have??? His tail only looks normal, not dragged down when he is swimming, also there is a little aqaurium salt in the tank. Pleas Help!!!!!!!!!!

Cyan is close to a rainbow colored betta, he has a dark blue/green/purple body, tan fins that are rimmed with green/ blue/puple.

His tail is clamped unless he swims quickly

Also, the undergravel filter is a combo with an air pump

This is kind of what he looks like, though his body is darker and he isnt a crowntail or whatever type of tail it has.

Septicemia, also known as red streak disease might resemble what your fish has. This disease is usually caused by high ammonia levels or various organisms. It can be treated with a broad spectrum antibiotic. Fungus Eliminator made by Jungle Labs treats serious fungus and bacteria diseases fast. You can find this product in most pet stores

Good Luck!

Charmed: in the wild bettas have thousands of gallons. I've never seen a rice paddie less than a few thousand gallons, even in the dry season. This tank is perfect.

The red veining could be a sign of a disease called septicemia. Try Mardel Maracyn Plus. Its liquid and comes in a white bottle rather cheap.

Gosh, I'll try to help, I've had several bettas, all of them lived for a few years.
First, I only put my bettas in Arrowhead spring water, no chemicals or salt.
Also there is a plant tree oil that I put in my goldfish tank when she gets spots.
But try just purified or natural spring water first. Ease him into it by putting small amounts of that water in his existing take until you have gradually completely changed his water over.
Hope this helps!

It's pretty common for bettas to change color. Water temp, diet, color of the surrounding gravel, all of these things play a part in their coloration. If everything looks fine, he's healthy, no signs of stress, don't worry about it. And don't be surprised if the color continues to change, I bought a blue betta once and within 3 months I had a nearly completly red one! And he lived for 4 years.:)

The red lines could be a bacterial infection. I would use Pimafix to cure any fungal/bacterial issues.

are the red lines along the rays or more like weird veins? is cyan a light cyan or dark cyan all over?

most likely the red is in his coloring. it could have been subdued when it was feeling less than happy in its little cup at walmart. most bettas have slight bits of coloring that is off -- like most of my reds have bits of blue on their bodies -- i have a yellow that has red that comes up on its fins when its flaring or being active.

if it is veiny it could be a sign of not enough oxygen in the water.

fin rot usually involves clamped fins -- they won't be displaying -- they are clamped down. it looks kind of like bits of dead fin flaking off like you lose dead dry skin only its their fin falling off in small chunks. it usually is fairly rapid. i have lost 1/2s of fins in 2 days.

First off, betas are freshwater, no salt, second off, that's probably not fin rot and I don't know what it is.

This fish lives in a very small area.. Your tank is WAY to big for the fish..When you got the fish was it in a small round bowl?? It would hold maybe a quart of water at the most..Some have plants on the top of the bowl...I would get him out of that big tank and put him in a small one..
