A turtle! I love turtles and since you like snakes they are kind of alike. They're both reptiles anyway, and like Kate said you could make it a terrarium.

Would she let you get a lizard of some sort or mice/rats(rodents) or a turtle? I wouldn't let my daughter get a snake either but she has had 3 or 4 mice, 2 hamsters & 2 rats not to mention the cats, dogs & rabbits. She also wanted a tarantulla or scorpion which I said no to, also; so you might see if your mom would let you have one of those. Or a couple of hermit crabs.

a 20 gal. aquarium?? sounds like you already have the perfect cage for gerbils, gerbils are great pets, because they live together (not solitary like hamsters), pets like guinea pigs, ferrets, etc.... need a much bigger cage, so i wouldn't go with that.
gerbils are low maintenance, sweet, don't produce much waste, and active/athletic!!

a dog ! you should never put a smal animal like a hampster or rabbit in the aquarium ! my teacher did it to her rabbit ,she tried to jump out and it killed her. so stick with a dog.

Turtles, they require little care. They are quiet, they don't howl. They come in different varities too.
