I think it would be a fair thing to do on poor Tinkerbell's behalf. Imagine the taunts at aschool. :(

He doesn't want to call her Tinkerbell as a nickname. He wants it to be her actual first name, officially. Poor little thing.

How would you like to have to tell people your birth name is Tinkerbell?!
My elder borthers wanted my mum to call me 'Cecil' if I was a boy, and 'Cyrilla' if I was a girl. Luckily for me, she had the sense to tell them to shut up.

I wouldn't REALLY slap him, tempting as it is. Her full name would be Tinkerbell Rachael Gabbana Low. (Low being her surname). No, unfortunately, I am not kidding.

joe m: It is nothing to do with my being closed minded, it is to do with the welfare of the child, and the inevitable fact that she is going to get bullied to hell and back with a name like Tinkerbell. If you can't see that, YOU ARE THE CLOSED MINDED ONE. Why don't you try using some common sense? Now get out of my question.

Well, when my daughter was young she got into a few girl fights a few times and I suppose this is just part of growing up. However, the other little girls were around my daughters age and the 'fights' usually were no more than a little shove or push, grabbing each others toys, etc. You sort of expect this from three, four or five year old kids...certainly not from a 11 year old slapping an 8 year old. You have every right to be mad and concerned. Your son is a handsome young dude and there will be girl crushes on him. And young girls can get embarrassed easily. But there is no excuse for embarrassment having physical violence as a result. I really don't know what to suggest to you if the girl's mother isn't returning your call. What I would do is strongly encourage (if not force) the girl's parents to have her go to some sort of anger management counseling with a professional. EDIT: The 11 year old girl who slapped your daughter obviously knew right afterward what she did was wrong. She probably could have made things easier if she instantly apologized for her fit of anger. Instead, she tried to cover it up. Sadly, this may be a reflection on her parents and the way she has been raised so far. If so, either the mother or both parents will try to play the whole thing down instead of accepting responsibilities. If this happens your only recourse may be to report it to Child Welfare.

Extend my sympathies to the child when she is born if he uses Tinkerbell. Suggest he shorten it to Belle, which is a lovely name for a girl (also a Disney name from Beauty and the Beast). Or if they insist on Tinkerbell, suggest it as a second name, using Rachael first. I actually like the Gabbana and would use that after Rachael making Tinkerbell the third name if they want a long name like that.
Tell them to sit down and write out the ENTIRE name 15 times in a row and see how they like that LOOOONG name. Remember the baby will grow into an adult and who will take "Tinkerbell" seriously????

I think he's winding you up. At the end of the day the mother of his child will probably make the final decison. One can hope that she's not that into fairy names but it's been done before. Musician and humanitarian Bob Geldoff has a daughter named Trixie Tinkerbelle. She's quite a fine young lady actually. I think celebrities can get away with these trendy kind of names, but it wouldn't be so easy for everybody else.

Oh yes! You should slap him!
Just think of the situations this'll bring up, you can't seriously call yourself that at an interview. I love it as a nickname but what kind of child would you turn out to be if you were called Tinkerbell?
What kind of job would she get? Lawyer? Doctor? Police woman? It's just a shame you can't be a godmother professionally 'cos that'd be the best thing for her.
Oooh dear!

Maybe as a nickname, but as her birth name, I would slap him hard. His daughter is going to grow up to resent the name and him. You know I am all for unique names, but Tinkerbell?
Come on, you have to draw the line somewhere. Why don't you suggest like Annabell or Something. Good Luck.

Slapping him is up to you, but I doubt it'll make a difference.
Is he being serious? Or is he just messing around, seeing what others will say? Also, if he is being completly serious... what does the mother of the child think about this?
Try putting some sense into him rather than slapping him.. ask him.. "do you honestly think your daughter will like that name when shes in her teenage years.. adult years".. etcetc I for one would be pissed at my parents.
Good luck!

Don't slap him. Things could be worse. Imagine him naming his SON Tinkerbell... If that idea even comes to him mind, slap him. Twice.
