does your tank have a filter, or an air bubbler? if not, try getting those items...they generally help.

contrary to popular belief, goldfish cannot actually survive without oxygen in their water, as they produce very high amounts of amonia....beta fish are the only aquarium fish that you can safely and successfully have in a fish bowel without a thermometer, filter, and or air bubbler.

goldfish not only need warm, oxygenated water, but they also need clean water. they get sick very easy from the water they are in because of their amonia....

think about it...would you want to breath in the very same water you are constantly peeing in if you were a fish?

i would suggest getting a filter and air pump for this fish and tank if you do not already have them, and then maybe that will help your fishie out....

keep me posted and let me know how things turn out, okay.

Without more information about the fish, it's hard to say. It could be a lack of oxygen. It could be poor water quality. It could be a disease, but that depends on what other symptoms the fish may be exhibiting on its body, if any. Different diseases need to be treated differently, so to tell you to do something without more information might be wrong or ineffective. It also could be loneliness. Goldfish are very social creatures and get very depressed when they are alone. They love having a friend to be with. Read these links about water quality and diseases and see if you can find more information that applies so you know how to treat it properly.

It doesn't sound good. A happy, healthy fish will swim. Is your tank clean? Does it have a filter? He might also like water a little colder.

my goldfish does that, just stays at the bottom and ..hovers there-

she's been like that for 3 years- still alive and healthy, so i don't really think that there really is a big problem, but you might want to do some research or something first...

Really, goldfish can't withstand tropical temperatures for very long, & burn themselves out, eventually dying from stress. The accelerated breathing shows that he is seriously ill.

Test your water for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. These toxins can build up in the tank and make the fish sick.

Yep, you will see him floating in no time. That kinda sucks, sounds like a painful or sad death. . . can you do anything to help his pain, like flush it down the toilet right now before you see him die or give it to a cat?
