Using a blind expected value approach would tell you the first gamble is preferrable, as it has an expected gain of $2000 while the second has an expected loss of 20 cents. And if you were able to play 1000 times I'd certainly take the first one! But assuming you only get to play once I'd take the second gamble. Why? Because what I value isn't the money in of itself; it's what I can buy with that money, and the first dollars you have are spent on more necessary items, and vice versa. If I gain 10 grand, I may spend it on a nice vacation; if I lose the same amount, well, there goes a good chunk of my retirement. 60 chance of gaining a nice vacation vs. 40 chance of making my retirement less cozy, and suddenly it doesn't look like such a gain anymore.

Grand means 1000. Five grand is 5000. And so on.

One grand is not just the number "1000"
One grand is a short form of one thousand dollars, $1000.00.
It can change depending on which country's money you're using, for example, one grand of US dollar is not equalled to one grand of Euro.

1 grand =1000 But dosn't mean 1000 Dollars. its just 1000 if u say i grand in India its 1000INR but if u r talking about 1 grand US$ it will be 1000us$. so on all other currency.
Like we use word "bucks" when referring to money
Same 1 grand is equals to 1000 bucks
