My daughter has had a real problem with diaper rash she is 4 months old and her doctor told me to us aquaphor lotion from over the counter. It works but it is $5 for a small tube like what you would keep in your purse. It will clear up her diaper rash in a couple of days then if you don't keep using is everytime I change her it comes back within a day. I asked her doctor if maybe it was her diapers he said no that it was basicly just real bad dry skin. The aquaphor lotion is 90% petroulem is that the same as using vaseline?

I know that aquaphor is supposed to be a good product. Get some desitin...I swear by that stuff. I buy mine at Family Dollar for about 2 bucks. If my son has a rash then I change him about every hour at the least and keep putting that on. A little goes a long way. And its ALWAYS gone by the morning. It's really great. But yes you can use vaseline as a protective coating probably more preventive. But if she has a rash you need something with medicine to clear it up.

Actually depending on what diaper you are using, it can be the diapers. I used Pampers and never had one diaper rash until I tried a cheap drugstore brand, and she got a horrible diaper rash after one night using the new diapers, it didn't keep the moisture away from her well enough. Switched back to pampers and never had another outbreak since.

Usually (note i said usually, not always) diaper rash is caused by moisture, not being too dry. Vaseline can actually trap moisture in the skin and not allow it to breathe which can make the rash worse. The key if you are using a petrolatum based product is to make sure the area is totally dry and not moist before you apply the cream so that it doesn't trap the moisture in there causing it to get worse. It works by creating a barrier to keep diaper moisture OUT and away from the skin.

Good luck.

Vaseline is safe to use, 6 kids and 10 years and I have used a tonne of vaseline. Don't be afraid to use whatever daily protectant cream works best for you .
Other things to do to prevent rash are...
# frequent diaper changes
# letting baby go without a diaper as much as possible
# using unscented wipes
# using warm water and a mild soap instead of wipes
# using a squirt bottle to clean without rubbing
# letting the diaper area fully dry before putting another diaper on

** Aquaphor is just another brand of vaseline !

If your childs skin is really sensitive, try switching to Huggies if you arent using them. They have special ingredients in the diapers that help protect a childs skin, and keep it soft. Also, use oatmeal baths, change her diapers more frequently, and try to give her nakey time to dry out her bottom. A&D ointment works well. I learned that alternating between the ointment and baby powder worked. The ointment soothed it, and the powder helped keep her drier. I actually have a tube of pure petroleum jelly (vaseline) and it says right on it that it can be used for diaper rash.

Try letting her go bare bottom as much as possible. The air will help heal the rash quickly.
