The Egyptian Pyramids were constructed as tombs for the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt in the 4th and 5th Dynasty.
There are over 200 recognised pyramids in Egypt.
Most are located on the Giza Plateau and Saqqara.
Most of the larger Pyramids would have had adjoining temple complexes and causeways leading to the Nile.
At that time a man made bay existed, however the Nile has changed its coursed many times and no trace remains.
At Giza,on the plateau would have been a huge Necropolis. With an adjoining town that supported over 5.000 people.
This town was the home of the people who worked permanently on the pyramids, and their families.
When the farmers had a lull in their work of crop and herd raising. They would come and work on the pyramids.
Slaves were not used as extensively as was once thought.
Each nome or area in Egypt, was expected to supply a certain amount of workers for building the pyramid each year. Artisans, masons, labourers, doctors and various officials were only a few of the different types of people who were needed to build and maintain the pyramids.
The remains of the town and the cemetaries of the people who lived and worked there still remain, and are currently being escavated.
The building of pyramids declined at the begining of 5th Dynasty.
Royal burials were then carried out at Abydoss.

The pyramids served as tombs for the pharaohs. Ancient egyptians were very preoccupied with death and the afterlife, and spent a large amount of time preparing the pyramids to house the body of their king for all eternity. They had to be secure because the spirit of the pharaoh was believed to return to his body to sleep, so if the body was damaged, the it would not be able to perform this function. The pyramids also held the king's treasures so that he would be able to ue them in the afterlife.
