Oh dear, I find myself disagreeing with Joachin for the first time. You most certainly do not need a perfect body type for many of the college dance programs out there. The fact that most college dance programs focus on modern dance, which is an art form that is far more accepting of diverse body types, means that your options are quite broad (no pun intended). (My daughter, at 5'5", was one of the tallest dancers at a college program that is just up the street from the Rock School.)

You will need to visit some dance programs - any dance programs - just to start thinking what factors are more important to you in meeting your goals. (What styles of dance interest you? What do you hope to do after college? Are you looking for a more traditional college or a conservatory? etc) You will also need to talk to many current and former dance majors and listen to their stories. Then research your options and go out to visit the schools you're most interested in. Use Dance Magazine's College Guide:

Call in advance to see if you can arrange to observe or participate in dance classes.

I have far more information about getting into college dance programs than I can fit into this response. But another suggestion that I could offer to you is that, if you can, you should look into attending summer dance workshops that are offered through college dance programs. They are a great way of introducing you to what is in store.
