Bad answers so far. First of all, both the Pentium D and Core 2 Duo are dual core, so I don't know what they are talking about. As for the second guy, the lowest Core 2 Duo outpaces the Pentium D 960, and the Core 2 Duo is cheaper. The Core 2 Duo is based on better architecture, has a higher front side bus speed, and more cache.

Well it's obviously core 2 duo. Pentium D is just an upgrade of Pentium 4 and generally it is a little faster and has more speed (gigahertz). Although Core 2 duo is a lot faster. You can run multiply applications at once without slowing down your comp cause it runs on 2 processors. Although it can still be slow if you don't have a lot of physical memory. So basically Core 2 duo is better.

As far as speed goes, they are just about the same, the new core duo uses alot less power (wattage) i would go with a high end Pentuim D 950 or 960 and save some money as the new core's are high in price.only the high end core duo really out power the D960.

Depends on your application, but in general to core 2 duo will outpace the pentium because it has multiple processors on the same board. To really get the most out of the multiple processors, though, the software needs to be able to use them both, so some software will do better on the pentium if it is specifically made only to single thread.
