A great film noir movie is 'The Night of the Hunter' starring Robert Mitchum and Shelley Winters. It was made in 1955.

'Ben Harper has committed murder for $10,000. He hides the money and makes daughter Pearl and son John promise not to tell anyone where it is hidden, not even their mother Willa. In prison and awaiting hanging, Ben meets his cellmate, the Preacher, who tries unsuccessfully to get Ben to reveal where he stashed the money. When Preacher is released from prison he heads for the Harper home, intent on finding the money. Preacher charms Willa and wins her hand in marriage, only to kill her when she learns what he is really like. With only Pearl and John separating him from a small fortune, the Preacher unleashes the full force of his true, evil self.'

I've attached two links to clips from the movie which are on youtube and also a site with the history of Film Noir and near the bottom of the page is a list of film noir movies.

Good luck!

The husband cheats on the wife. The wife says she wants to kill him in front of people, including the man who really loves her. He ends up dead and the man who always loved her disposes of the gun.

A detective and his smart aleck wife accidentially stumble onto the case. They find out that the man and his girlfriend (who is an insurance agent) were going to kill the wife and claim the insurance. The girlfriend also had a bird statue with a secret code in it.

The wife goes to a Latin country and the boyfriend follows her down there, as does the dead husband's girlfriend. The dectective and his wife follow, along with their dog.

They get the girlfriend to confess and the wife and the man who really loves dance to a snappy tune with a 100 dancers and several stages.

I think I mixed genres. The Thin Man, The Maltese Falcon, Laura, Sunset Boulevard are a few.

A genre that focuses on deep, dark subjects..... Classic films include "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte" with Bette Davis (old black & white, but still great)..... I'd also include "Sling Blade" - Billy Bob Thornton... awesome film! Watch one and go from there....
