Ever since I started getting my period, it has been irregular and I have no idea why. It ranges from the expected month between periods, to several months between them. When I do end up getting it, it tends to be very heavy. And i have also noticed that they will come when I least expect it - for ex. when I am looking forward to an event; has happened in two instances. I dont know what to do to regulate it. Any suggestions?

p.s. I am not sexually active. I also am a lifeguard/swim instructor and am forced to work through periods (tampons=my saviours of course).

for your first two years, your period is going to be irregular ranging from months to weeks. I got mine like last year and i am kinda consistent. Good luck!!!

You don't say how old you are, but irregular periods are common for a few years until the hormones level out. You sound like you are a very active person and this can effect the timing between periods as well. Even though you are not sexually active, you may want to consider going on the pill as this will regulate the periods and make them more predictable also less painful if cramps are a problem for you.

My best suggestion to head to the doctor to have a see if there is a diagnosable condition behind the irregularity. For example PolyCysticOvarianSyndrome PCOS or thyroid imbalance. The Doctor might prescribe the contraceptive pill to regulate the hormones and your period.
Best of luck

If you're younger, it's normal for your periods to be irregular for a while. If you've been having your period for more than a year or two, it's time to go to the doctor to discuss this situation.

They may put you on birth control to regulate your hormones, make your period more predictable, and make them less painful.
