I have 3 children I pay child support for. The oldest turned 18 almost 2 years ago. I finally figured out the child support amount will not drop automatically, because now I have only 2 children to support. How do I lower it, or can I even? The calculators only ask the age of my youngest, with no consideration for the age of the oldest. Is this normal? What should I do?

you need to go to the court house an file a petition to modify support. then you will have a hearing by a mediator who will calculate how much you will pay for your 2 remaining children based upon how much both you and their mother make.

You have to file a petition with the court in which your current order is filed. You do not have to use an attorney, just fill out the paperwork and file it, the court will set a date, appear and request the amount you pay to be reduced and ask that the monies paid to your ex for children over 18 be applied to future payments and have the amount reduced. But check your paperwork carefully....some attorneys add that the child be covered even past 18, if they are enrolled as a full time student up to age 25. Good luck!

umm.. well i hate to tell you your support will not go down that much for one child being of age. it is cheaper to more children ( as dumb as that may sound ). in some states ( like NY) you have to pay child support until the child is 21 even if they are not in college and like in Ohio you are done paying child support when the child turns 18 even if they have not graduated from high school . as someone mentioned in some states you may have to pay support until they are finished with college or age 24. you need to check with you child support agency in the state you live .

You need to petition the court and show why you shouldn't pay child support. Typically, you pay until they turn 22, or 18 if they aren't going to college.

Usually once a child turns 18 you don't have to pay child support. It also depends on how old your children are, the older they get the less you pay. You might want to speak with a family law attorney.

You need to go back to the court that assigned the child support and petition to have it reduced due to one of the children reaching their majority. You can usually do this without an attorney.

I believe that once they turn 18, you no longer have to pay for them. Just th other two now. Your payments should be dropped automatically. Devide the previous amount by three and then multiply that by two and that should be the approximate amount of what you should be paying. Another words, your payments should be cut by a third.
