I've abbreviated the names with first initials
1) J=5xS
J+S=78
6S=78
S=13
Julius sold 13x5=65
2)A=18
18=2K-4
K=11 races
3) A=4+2L
A+L=10
A=10-L
10-L=4+2L
6=3L
L=2
Andre therefore hit 8 runs.

1. We don't know how many computers Sam sold, so make that your variable (x). We know that Julius sold 5 times as many as Sam, so 5 times x (5x) Total means you should ADD them, so

x + 5x = 78 Then combine like terms and solve for x.

2. We don't know how many races Kelly ran, so make that your variable (r). Ana ran 18 which is (is means =) 4 fewer (subtract) than twice (multiply by 2) that kelly ran.

18 = 2k - 4 Solve for k

3. We don't know the number of runs that Larry hit, so make that your variable (y). Andre hit four more (add) than twice (multiply by 2) of larry. Total (add the two together) is 10.

y + 2y +4 = 10 Combine like terms and Solve for y

Hint: Use the key words to figure out what operations you should use and where the equal sign needs to go

Ok, #2 is the one I know how to do for sure.

18 + 4 = 22 x 2 = 44. Kelly ran 44 races. You use backsolving to help you find the answer. Since 18 is 4 fewer races, you add 4 to 18, and you get 22. Now, since it says twice the number of races, you have to multiply that by 2, and you get 44.

The others are basically guess-and-check. Good luck! Hope I helped a little.

shouldn't you be figuring these out yourself? they're pretty easy problems...if you really think about it.....good luck on your test!

If knowing the answers isn't cheating, I'll give you answers....
1. I don't know this answer....I haven't done math like this for a long time....you figure it out :)
2. Kelly ran 11 races
3. I think Andrew hit 6 home runs, but I'm not quite sure

1. 78=5x + x
78= 6x
divide both sides by 6
13=x
