First of all, it depends on how much you download software and the size fo the downloads and the size of your hard drive(s). I haven't done a defrag in the last 3 or 4 months. And I don't need to. Remember this, defrag puts wear and tear on your hard drive. If you do a lot of downloads and removals then maybe once every month or two, but that would have to be a lot of downloads and deletions to have the need for a defrag. This is the advice I got from some computer specialists that work with computers for a living. They know what they are talking about. IF you don't believe me, go to Komando.com and check it out. IT is run by a lady that goes by the name of Kim Komando and is very helpful. She is a computer wiz and has a syndicated nationwide radio program. I think that will help you with any and all of your computer questions and also she has some cool downloads for free. Check it out and let me know if you like it.

It depends on how your hard drive if formatted. If it's NTFS you really don't need to do it that often. If it's FAT or FAT32 you need to do it regularly.
Most hard drives with 2000 or XP are NTFS. Defragmenting used to be a big deal with the older file allocation tables but NTFS took care of a lot of those issues.
I work in computer support and we never defragment a drive unless there is serious issues. Defragmenting will only speed up file access.

Some people do it weekly....some every month...some more & some don't do it until their computer's running so slow they're forced to....if you decide to defragment your drive then when you attempt to do it your computer will inform you whether you need to take that action....when you go into defragment just click on "analize" & follow the instructions....you will be informed then whether you need to go ahead or not....it really depends how much you use your computer & how much data is on it.... â¥

I do mine once a week. It keeps the computer working better. Set it up to automatically defrag once a week while your sleeping and you will have less problems. I also run a memory manager because windows wastes so much system resources.

I would say I am an average user and I do mine about every 2 months, it normally says I dont need to but I do it anyway to keep my pc running nice and fast, also I do a disc clean up every 2 weeks, this keeps it in optimum running order. I hope this helps you out

Since you have XP you can go to defragment and click Analise. It will Analise the hard drive and tell you if you need to defragment or not....Good Luck...

I always defragment my drive at least once a month. Even if my computer says I don't need to. It keeps the computer fast.

It all depends on what you do on your computer. Different activities fragment it more than others. If you find once a month is not enough just do it more often!
