its short for " are not" - the apostrophe replaces the vowel you removed from "not - so its "aren't"

It is a sortcut of ARE NOT. Writing "are'nt" makes no sence as the ' is useless and the "o" is missing.

Aren't. As explained above, the apostrophe takes the place of the o when you put the words "are" and "not" together.
Is not = Isn't (sometimes expressed as "ain't" as in the song "Ain't She Sweet?" --- not recommended in "proper" English).
