We cant be we are ruining the atmosphere, soon all will be in tatters.

Human society got screwed up about 6000 years ago. Before that humans were a lot more kind. That's the time when the Saharasian area started to turn to desert and people started migrating. They were not happy campers. All archeological evidence before about 6000 years ago points to peaceful societies. A lot were nomadic, but there were towns too. Towns worked effectively, and war was almost unheard of. Nomads had a much healthier life than modern humans. Their diet was more varied and more nutritious. They spent much less time at "work" and spent a lot of time with family and friends.

Do you mean the United States or the whole world? If your talking about the US, then I know we are the richest country, but technology wise, I think Japan may be ahead.
