it should end with yours faithfully,as you dont know the name if the person you are writing to,if it was to a mrs smith for example it would be yours sincerely,by the way, only learnt that last week because my 11yr old daughter is revising for her SATS exams.

Your right, "Yours sincerely", ends a letter to a person you know well or have corresponded with before.
"Yours Faithfully", is always the end to a letter to a stranger such as one which begins"Dear Sir or Madam", or a "To Whom..." It is also very important to put a a capital "F" on faithfully but should always be a lower case "S" on sincerely.

To whom It May Concern, is a very general Generic and sometimes official, heading for a document. The ending yours faithfully , yours truly, or sincerely yours are all personal endings Thank you, or just your signature underlined and your name printed underneath is sufficient.

If it's addressed to a specific person e.g. Dear Fred, or Dear Mr Smith, then it's yours sincerely.

If it's not addressed personally e.g. Dear Sir or Dear Madam etc, then it's yours faithfully.

so in your case it will be yours faithfully.

Yes it should. You use 'yours faithfully' when you do not have a name to address the letter to, and 'yours sincerely' when you have the name of the recipient.

I was taught that its yours faithfully

Yours sincerely should only be used if you are addressing it to a certain someone

Never use sincerely for dear sirs or madams etc

There is no need for a "farewell statement" because it is not addressed to anyone. You start "To Whom it May Concern" centred on the page, and end with two space lines and then:

Signed.......[signature written after it]
[Printed name underneath]
[Date underneath] if not at the top of the letter.

These should be left-justified.
