i remember when we talked about this during our childbirth preperation classes. one week it got mentioned and then the next week we split up into men & women so we could all talk about our personal fears & concerns and this was the biggest thing anyone had!

one woman admitted she'd started calling all her friends and asking them "did you poop? did you poop?" another woman (recently came here from another country) said that it was common practice (it used to be here in the US, but not anymore) where she was come to have an enema, which would remove everything from the bowels and make it so you were much less likely to poop during child birth. if you want one of these the nurses will give you one (some will instruct you how and let you do it yourself if you prefer)

some women get "warning signs" that labor is coming, and one of these is loose stools & diarrhea, so you may find yourself emptying your system before labor begins and you may not have another bowel movement for a couple days after you give birth. one less thing to worry about, so lucky for you if this happens, i guess.

either way, the nurses told us that they handle the situation very discreetly, if you poop while you're pushing they clean it up real fast (they have towels beneath you just in case, that they just pick up, wipe you off and you're set) and 90% of the time your partner won't have a clue what happened unless he's staring at that end instead of helping you concentrate like he should be.

it may be uncomfortable to think about, but it's the last thing you need to worry about, because you really have no control over it...worry about more imporant things, like should you have your hubby rearrange the nursery AGAIN when he gets home from work! =D

I don't know if I have or not, I prefer not to know lol. I'm told that the L & D nurses actually get a bit more miffed with you (they may not show it) if you don't have a BM while pushing. Having a BM at this point indicates to them that you are pushing hard AND with the right muscles. It is TOTALLY not a big deal. I'd be more upset about getting an enima (ain't nobody putting ANYTHING up there!). The reason they discontinued the practice of enimas is because there was no reason for them. It is in no way unhygenic as it is cleaned up right away (they are always prepared and expecting this) and it always happens well before the baby makes their entrance, so it's not like your baby is going to land in it. Don't worry about not pooping, if you do you won't be able to focus on pushing properly and might end up having to get a C-Section. Good Luck! (and happy pooping...er I mean delivery...)

I've heard a lot of stories from people that had lol. A lot of people freak out worrying that they might poop when they are trying to push their child out. It happens a lot more often than you might think, and it's never a big deal to the doctor or anyone else. If you ask me, delivering the afterbirth is grosser! I, personally, didn't poop while I was pushing, I got all that out of the way during the hours and hours of painful contractions(that made me feel like I had to go, and I did!). By the time it was time to push, I suppose there wasn't anything left lol. Thank god for that, because even though it's not supposed to be a big deal, I think I still would have been embarassed!

Honey, you can minimize it by trying to poop in early labor (the body usually helps with this anyway). But think about it. Your baby's head is squeezing the bowel as it moves down the birth canal. It's kind of like rolling a bowling ball over a tube of toothpaste. If there's anything in there, it's coming out. That said, don't be embarrassed. If it's that big a deal to you, ask that your husband not be in the room, or stay up by your head holding your hands. But seriously, nearly everyone does it. Most competent nurses or midwives will clean it up as quickly as possible because laboring women's sense of smell is heightened. The only reason they wouldn't clean it up immediately is if you or the baby needed their immediate attention. And that's all for the good.

You know how they tell you to concentrate on controling your breathing? Well consider that and pushing pretty much all you can control while your in labor. Your muslces are putting so much pressure to get baby out, it cleans everything else out as well. Some people have the runs a few days a week up till delivery like my mother did. Others, and not the least bit uncommon is losing control during delivery. You wouldn't even notice it, your too focused on pushing and getting baby out it doesn't matter anyways. If you think it'd be emabressing, trust me, the doctors and nurses have seen it all. And I do mean all.

I did with my second baby. You have to push with those same muscles. Its not a big deal though, the doctor even helped me out a little,...lol. anyway, dont worry too much about it. If you poop, you poop. Theres even a book for little kids called, "everybody poops"

It is common place for a laboring woman to have a bowel movement when pushing. You are using the same muscles to push. It is not a big deal, it is cleaned up quickly.

I don't know if I did or not but that's what it felt like when I was ready to give birth. I felt like I had to take the biggest poop i had ever had to take, I was scared! Then the Dr. said no you are ready to give birth! Surprise!
