Would you care to sin
With Elinor Glyn
On a tiger skin?
Or would you prefer
To err with her
On some other fur?

This fable crafted by Frank Stockton would become one the most quoted, debated and reread stories ever. The fate of the young man as he faces two doors -- on with a beautiful maiden, the other with a ferocious tiger -- will forever be contested. Even the little Hollywood ditty above, first published in 1927, ties back to that infamous story.

The first link below has the story as it was first published. Having just read that again it's a delightful fable. One I hope you greatly enjoy.

The frustrating part of this -- and I don't want to give away too much -- is that we'll never KNOW WHAT HAPPENS! Which, oddly, adds to the charm of this tale. Just what does the King's fair daughter do?

There is a story of a group of British surveyors, just before World War One, at the base of Mt. Everest. A Tibetan Monk comes down from the foothills and approaches them. Before anyone can exchange greetings the monk asks them "What door did he open, the one with the maiden or the tiger?"

So 40-years after Stockton wrote his fable, a monk in Tibet was still waiting for an answer from the outside world. The Lady or the Tiger?

Now that -- is damn good writing.

There was a young lady from Niger
Who smiled as as she rode on a tiger
They came back from the ride
With the lady inside
And the smile on the face of the tiger.

This is a great story! Have you read it? I strongly suggest you do. It's really, really short. A princess who's betrothed has an affair with a commoner, and is caught. The sentance is his choice. In front of the entire kingdom, he must choose one of two doors. Behind door number one is a beautiful maiden, waiting to be his bride. Behind door number two is a hungry tiger, awaiting his next meal. The man gives one last look to the princess, who holds a number with her fingers to which door to enter. He opens the door.....The rest is up to you.
