There is a fluid in between your bones called senovial fluid. When you sqeeze it by bending your fingers the fluid shifts out of the pocket creating a cracking sound. Most people can't do it back to back on the same knuckle because it has to refill the pocket. It is said that it causes arthritis, but that is not true, it isn't harmful.

When you crack your knuckles it is caused by a gas bubble between your bones and then they have to refill after an hour. People say that when you get older it will become bigger and that is so true. But you won't have arthritis trust me. Arthritis is when cold air comes to the knuckles and then they hurt for about forty minutes because you need warm air on it to help it feel better.

When you crack your knuckles, you are popping little air pockets in the fluid in your knuckles. You won't die or get athritis like a lot of people say-- it's actually good for you. Just don't do it too often.

I've heard many answers to this. Onebeing that it is little gas bubbles popping, but that never made sense to me since you can feel something more than that happening to your finger. Another thing I've heard is that its the tendon slipping over the joint. Maybe its a combination of the two.
