Are the headphones unplugged? sounds like the speakers are broke from your description.

When you have the volume cranked up do you hear sound (static) coming from the speakers? If not then the speakers could just be busted. Have you recently installed anything on your laptop? Sometimes things mess with drivers and that might have stopped sound from coming from your speakers as well. Try "right" clicking on "My Computer" then selecting "Properties" then "Hardware" and then "Device Manager" look for your sound device and ensure it is working properly. You may want to try restarting your laptop if this happened after you installed something.
