plants need a lot more than water to grow; they need carbon dioxide, sunlight, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and many trace elements.

As far a source of water goes, soft drinks are about 99% water so they may be sufficient. The problem comes with the solutes in the coke etc which will upset the osmotic potential of the soil thus making movement of water into the plant difficult. If the solute amount increases too far it will stop water movement into the roots completly or even draw water out of them.

Good question, never thought about trying to grow a plant with coke, but I would imagine other liquids would most likely do bad things to the soil Ph and kill the plant.
