I am a South African living in South Africa and it is soul destroying to see what is happening to our country. There is no future unless something is done. This government needs a wake up call and that is to take away the 2010 World Cup. Our government cannot protect it's own citizens how can they protect overseas visitors? There was one story of a woman who tried to phone her local police station - no reply so she decided to drive down and talk to them. When she got there, they were all sleeping!!! Another person phoned the police as she had suspicious people in the neighbourhood - they told her they did not have a vehicle to come and help.
The criminals are not being punished enough. A Judge dropped about 6 cases and let them go as she "was tired and hungry and wanted to go home". This country is full of corruption and cheats.
Just one thing - the superpowers watched Zimbabwe go to ruin - why would they help us?

What a good question ? We used to have a strong component that was First World. Jo'burg is a case in point. The bus service was reliable and water, gas and electricity were supplied without a hitch. That has all changed and the shopfronts downtown now all have steel shutters and the city is deserted after dark and on Sundays. The pavements are now cluttered with vendors offering a plastic plate full of 3 tomatoes and an onion eking out a living. This is where our THIRD WORLD component has surfaced. It was always hidden by the successes of the FIRST WORLD component. I guess it would be fair to say that we now straddle the SECOND WORLD and FOURTH WORLD as standards continue to decline on all fronts and the government is in denial on issues of health, crime, corruption and education. We were the powerhouse of the African continent which is why we are now flooded out by refugees from all over Africa. There is still a positive element and there is hope that once Zimbabwe is stabilised that this part of Africa will settle down and we can resume our attempts to halt the decline. We need the black majority to take their heads out of the sand and to vote intelligently for better people in government, not just for the party who put all their old "war horses" into powerful positions they are not skilled to hold. The Afrikaner always voted the way Grampa did that only begot a continuation of the status quo. We can do without a repeat of that scenario and the black person must come out of the 18th Century and join us in the 21st for a better life for all. I am a positive person but I am also positive we are still in decline and are looking more and more like a "Zimbabwe" every day. Praise the day we lose the ethnic attitudes and look for the person who is best suited for the job. I am also not saying that person has to be white but it would not be a crime to have some whites in serious positions of authority if they have the skills. Viva South Africa.

Believe me when I tell you that I wish the world would just live in peace. That, sadly, will never happen. I don't run the "powers that be". I am only speaking my mind, my opinion, on this. Do you think if Africa had massive amounts of oil or something else the world wanted, the U.N. wouldn't be right there, involved in everything? Truly, I pray for you, that's what I can do. That's all any of us can and need to do. God be with you.

I sincerely hope that the crime soon gets under control with the help of your fellow citizens. I have just returned and although I did not see any crime as such, I have great understanding as a simple by stander to the lower end of the people (salary and unsalaried) wise. That is a crime in itself. You have a beautiful country which is kept so by the every day hard workers who smile and are welcoming unlike the DutchAfricans.

Sorry, but its your own people doing the crimes and your own government not doing anything to stop it. And after Iraq, I don't think we would want to get involved anyway. If the situation was reversed ie; Britain in trouble, I wonder what country would stand up to help us?

I'm really sorry for what's going on in your country at the minute but have you seen what's going on in the UK? We have a constant terriorist threat, people blowing trains and buses up, people attempting to blow things up and kidnap people. We can't even sort our own Countries out. I'm sure if we had the means and capacity we would help but we don't at the minute.

You have the power to do it yourselfes. Just be more tough with the criminals. I see that probably South Africa has a very soft legislation with criminals.
