Well, I believe the purpose of homework is so that the students remain knowledged about what they are learning during class, and not just slack off at home. Though I do think that a lot of students these days are getting too much homework. Yes, homework should be given, but teachers, a reasonable amount only!!

Homework is both a good, and a bad thing.
It's good because it helps you retain and reinforce knowledge after you leave the classroom. A lot of people aren't going to go home and continue studying just for the heck of it, so homework is necessary in order to learn the material.
It's bad when there starts to be a lot of it and you have little free time outside of going to class and doing homework. This isn't much of a problem for elementary school and middle school when homework loads are fairly light. It becomes a problem in high school, and really hits you in college. You're often left wondering if your professors actually realize or care that you have other classes besides theirs.
Overall, I think homework is a good thing, even if I hate it. It just needs to be given in moderation, especially in college, when students are managing heavy courses and part-time jobs. You're absolutely right, we do have lives, and sometime it seems as if our professors do not realize that. Yes, you are in college for the purpose of getting an education, but you shouldn't have to be immersed in it 24 hours a day.

Lives doing what? There's a lot to learn. Besides, how is a teacher supposed to know if you're learning. If you just go by tests, then if someone doesn't get it, the teacher wouldn't know until too late. Can't give tests in every class cuz there wouldn't be any time to teach.

I know it sucks but it makes since giving that your teachers need to know how well you are learning somehow and they want to use much of the class time teaching instead of testing.
and somethings they need you to look up things that will take way to much time out of the daily 6 hours and so they they have you say read a book at home instead of doing it school.
