Step 1: Write an equation:
(the number of rectangles) + (the number of squares) = 540

Step 2: Assign variables for unknown numbers
The number of rectangles = x
The number of squares = x + 120

Step 3: Insert the variables into the equation
(x) + (x + 120) = 540

Step 4: Solve for the variable
x + x + 120 = 540
2x + 120 = 540
* Subtract 120 from both sides
(2x + 120) - 120 = 540 - 120
2x = 420
* Divide both sides by 2
(2x) / 2 = 420 / 2
x = 210

Step 5: Return to Step 2, and insert the known number in place of the variable
The number of rectangles = 210
The number of squares = 210 + 120 = 330

If there are 540 squares and rectangles, there must be 270 of each one and if there are 120 more squares then rectangles, take the 120 and add that to the 270 squares, which gives you 390 squares and 150 rectangles. These last numbers added together come to 540.

LAB is right...

if you didn't understand his answer...here's a simpler way to do it

divide 540 by 2 you get 270
then divide 120 by 2 you get 60
add 60 to the 270--answer :330 squares
and subtract 60 from the 270 answer: 210 rectangels
