It teaches you to write properly, learn different styles of writing, become more well rounded. Also, there are many interesting ideas in the books assigned in a literature class. It also may spark an interest into what they want to do the rest of their life.
It's about culture and going beyond merely what it takes to survive. Otherwise, we might as well be stuck back in the cave man days.
Besides, have you seen how kids write nowadays? It's sad when immigrants have a better grasp of the English language than people born in the US.

We study literature so we can learn how to think and understand. We don't have to memorize, but find meaning and enjoy. Literature can also be a journey through time, learning how people felt about past issues and compare them to our own feelings and understanding now.
Please try to enjoy the works. Even now as an adult, I still love to read a good book. You will thank yourself later if you end up with a love of reading.
Good luck!

So that we can learn how people who are smarter than us think! Literature is a window into the mind of the writer, and can also be a lens focused upon society. It can also help you to expand your mind and your vocabulary, which helps to make you smarter, too!
It can only improve you. And being improved ALWAYS helps you in life!
